Beyond the learning environment of Down Syndrome Academy, Friends of Down Syndrome has plans to create a dedicated campus, with an expanded wellness program and residential facility. As life expectancy increases for this population, parents and caregivers are no longer able to manage the rigor of a daily schedule for their loved ones with Down syndrome. Good options are limited, to say the least. So, as leaders in our field, we must make our own path to success.

The planned campus would be located on the west side of Houston within the MetroLift transport area. It would provide easy access to the community’s activities, restaurants, shops, and services. There are three proposed phases of development:

Phase I

  • Down Syndrome Academy classrooms, computer lab, workshop, outdoor “classroom” and library
  • Support staff including a nutritionist, nurse, speech therapist, occupational therapist and a physical therapist
  • Dining hall serving nutritious meals
  • Retail student-run café and shop
  • Auditorium and community hall
